- Learn about the interconnectedness of African people and how different ideas and practices travelled around the world.
- Understand how spiritual practices were used for liberation purposes and supporting the community.
- Explore how African practices were hidden and adapted due to colonialism.
- Learn from our ancestors resilience and wisdom to help us move forward.
This workshop is open to all those who identify as black, indigenous and/or a person of colour.
For those who are not black/ African heritage you must be working towards black liberation and wish to work in solidarity across cultures and identities.
The workshop will be run by me, Emma Kelly my pronouns are she/her, I am African Caribbean specifically Jamaican and white British heritage, born in the UK.
I am an avid researcher of African spiritual traditions and the intersection with liberation movements and how women and femmes influenced the practices. I am a practitioner and steward of the Indian tradition of yoga and meditation. I identify with black feminist principles of acknowledging the many layers of oppression and privilege and how they impact our lives. I am an LGBTQ ally. I also have a BA Honours in social work.
Jay Percy is my co creator for this workshop and her pronouns are she/her, she is from Antiguan, Jamaican and European descent, with her Jamaican roots traced back to the maroons.
Jay is an Obeah woman, spirit worker, sacred artist and training to be a psychotherapist. Jay is interested in the intersection of plant medicines, such a psychedelics and the therapeutic applications for healing. Jay has a wide array of knowledge with spiritual practices both African and European.
Within the workshop we aim to create an inclusive and safe a space as possible, therefore welcome those from the LGBTQ community to join and those with any accessibility requirements. Please contact me if you wish to discuss further.
We have two prices, 1 full price of 15 GBP for those in a financially stable position currently with more privileged identities, for example you are in a stable job or stable income.
The second price is 5 GBP for those with less financial security for example working a zero hours contract, single parents, disabled people, you are in receipt of benefits and also if you reside outside of the UK where the exchange rate is high.
Ultimately we do not want to prohibit anyone from joining due to financial barriers, yet we also wish for those who can afford to pay to make this energy exchange fair for the work.
The workshop will take place on zoom and will be recorded for those of you who cannot attend.
The workshop will start with introductions and short grounding, meditation practice then a talking section of each Caribbean sheroe, it will finish with a guided grounded meditation practice.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me or Jay Percy.
