African Sheroes of Turtle Island part 2.0 (online)
July 23rd 4 to 5pm BST
I would like to invite you to an online workshop dedicated to uplifting the stories of revolutionary African descent women from Turtle Island who were influenced by African spiritual traditions.
The workshop will centre around Mary Ellen Pleasant, the first self made African American millionaire. She gained the money and used it to help free, protect and serve African people during enslavement and post emancipation.
Mary Ellen Pleasant passed as white and used this privilege to access information and people to help expand her assets, whilst supporting black people through the underground railroad and through civil rights court cases.
Mary Ellen Pleasant was also known as the Vodou queen of California and was the apprentice of Marie Laveau the most famous Vodou queen in North America.
Learning objectives
This workshop is open to all those who identify as black, indigenous and/or a person of colour.
For those who are not black/ African heritage you must be working towards black liberation and wish to work in solidarity across cultures and identities.

Learning objectives
- Learn about the interconnectedness of African people and how different ideas and practices travelled around the world.
- Understand how spiritual practices were used for liberation purposes and supporting the community.
- Explore how African practices were hidden and adapted due to colonialism.
- Learn from our ancestors resilience and wisdom to help us move forward.
This workshop is open to all those who identify as black, indigenous and/or a person of colour.
For those who are not black/ African heritage you must be working towards black liberation and wish to work in solidarity across cultures and identities.
The workshop will be run by me, Emma Kelly my pronouns are she/her, I am African Caribbean specifically Jamaican and white British heritage, born in the UK.
I am an avid researcher of African spiritual traditions and the intersection with liberation movements and how women and femmes influenced the practices. I am a practitioner and steward of the Indian tradition of yoga and meditation. I identify with black feminist principles of acknowledging the many layers of oppression and privilege and how they impact our lives. I am an LGBTQ ally. I also have a BA Honours in social work.
Within the workshop I aim to create an inclusive and safe a space as possible, therefore welcome those from the LGBTQ community to join and those with any accessibility requirements. Please contact me if you wish to discuss further.
We have two prices, 1 full price of 10 GBP for those in a financially stable position currently with more privileged identities, for example you are in a stable job or stable income.
The second price is 5 GBP for those with less financial security for example working a zero hours contract, single parents, disabled people, you are in receipt of benefits and also if you reside outside of the UK where the exchange rate is high.
Ultimately I do not want to prohibit anyone from joining due to financial barriers, yet we also wish for those who can afford to pay to make this energy exchange fair for the work.
The workshop will take place on zoom and will be recorded for those of you who cannot attend.
The workshop will start with introductions and short grounding, meditation practice, it will finish with a guided grounded meditation practice.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
